House of Lenore was born in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Southwest Virginia, in Wytheville, where I grew up.

I was raised by a mother who moved through the world with a quiet kind of presence. She taught me early that confidence isn't loud. It lives in how you carry yourself, in stillness as much as in motion. I learned most of what I know by watching her.

She passed in the spring of 2024. The House began in the quiet that came after. Not to fix that grief or hurry past it, but to make a place where the things she gave me could keep living. Softness. Strength. The permission to take up room without apology.

For years now I've photographed women. In studios, outdoors, and far from home. The longer I do this work, the more I understand that it was never about turning anyone into something new. The women I photograph are already whole when they walk in. My work is to hold the room steady enough that they can see it for themselves.

That is what House of Lenore is. A studio, a gathering place, and a slowly growing community for women who are tired of performing and would like, for once, to simply be witnessed.

We work in boudoir and portraiture. We host Ladies' Nights, themed and low-key, where strangers become something like sisters. We hold retreats in the mountains, paced for rest rather than results. And we make a small line of things meant to feel like armor and silk at the same time.

None of it asks anything of you. You can share or stay quiet. Step in front of the camera or sit back and watch. Listening counts as presence here. Your privacy is protected, in the studio and in the room.

This is Appalachian to the bone. Dark and a little romantic. Feminine without performance. It holds your softness and your grit in the same hand.

Madeline Lenore is a portrait and boudoir photographer and the founder of House of Lenore. Raised in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Wytheville, Virginia, she has spent years photographing women and built House of Lenore as a women-centered creative house rooted in consent, privacy, and care. Her work has drawn national attention, including features by Forbes and Good Morning America. She lives and works in Southwest Virginia, where the House keeps its studio.
